The Full Story

Have you been told that you have “fatty liver” and that “we’re going to watch it”? What is this condition and what does watching it even mean?

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is the result of inflammation caused by build up of fat tissue within the liver. In some cases, this build up is asymptomatic while in others it can lead to liver scarring (fibrosis) and ultimately cirrhosis which is end stage liver failure.

At Michigan Weight Loss Institute we prioritize disease prevention, reversibility and delay of progression when possible. Majority of cases of non alcoholic fatty liver also known as metabolic liver disease cases are reversible with early diagnosis, staging and intervention. If left untreated, this condition  We focus on early detection and staging via non-invasive modalities such as blood test and various imaging to determine disease severity. In some cases, endoscopy and liver biopsy is utilized when necessary.

As part of your evaluation, you will consult with both a gastroenterologist/hepatologist (liver specialist) and a bariatrician/ bariatric medicine physician (weight management specialist). We also offer nutritional coaching and referral for behavioral psychotherapy when appropriate. Appropriate testing will be ordered and a multidisciplinary treatment plan formulated. A heavy emphasis on weight loss and nutrition to reverse and delay disease progression. This can be achieved via lifestyle modifications, utilization of anti-obesity medications and supplements, bariatric surgery coordination and in some advanced cases liver transplantation.
